Halloween: From Ancient Traditions to Modern Celebrations

Halloween is celebrated every year on the 31st of October, especially in countries such as the United States, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Today, it is famous for its costumes, pumpkins and scary decorations, but the history behind this celebration goes back more than two thousand years.

Halloween has its roots in an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain. The Celts lived in areas that are now Ireland, the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe. They celebrated Samhain at the end of the harvest season, when summer was coming to an end and the colder, darker months were beginning. People believed that, during this time, the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead became thinner. They lit large fires and took part in rituals connected with the changing seasons.

Over the centuries, these ancient traditions became connected with Christian celebrations, particularly All Saints' Day on the 1st of November. The evening before this day became known as All Hallows' Eve, a name that eventually developed into Halloween.

Halloween traditions spread across North America during the nineteenth century, when many Irish and Scottish immigrants brought their customs with them. One interesting tradition was carving lanterns. In Ireland, people traditionally used turnips, but in the United States, pumpkins were easier to find and much larger. As a result, pumpkins became one of the most recognisable symbols of Halloween.

Another famous tradition is trick-or-treating. On Halloween night, children dress up in costumes and visit houses in their neighbourhoods, asking for sweets. Many families decorate their homes with skeletons, ghosts, spiders and artificial cobwebs.

Some people spend hundreds of dollars creating elaborate displays, while others prefer simpler decorations.

However, Halloween is not just for children. In cities such as New York, thousands of adults participate in costume parades, themed parties and special events. The Village Halloween Parade, for example, attracts people wearing everything from frightening costumes to funny or highly creative outfits. For many adults, Halloween is an opportunity to express their creativity, socialise and enjoy a different kind of celebration.

Although Halloween has changed considerably over time, it still combines elements of history, mystery and imagination. What began as an ancient seasonal festival has become an international celebration that continues to evolve with each generation.
